From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

Is your company keeping up with the rapid changes in international standards that relate to RFID? Are you aware of how the Internet of Things will affect your business? High Tech Aid can provide detailed, customized reporting, monitoring and meeting attendance for your company needs. Email steve@hightechaid.com  for more information.

Lots of news this month, but one very sad piece. Alan Haberman, one of the industry's greats passed away earlier this month. Alan had been a major influence in the bar code and standards worlds and we will all miss him. I wrote a short piece for my standards blog at http://www.understandrfidstandards.com/250/loss-of-a-great-man-alan-haberman/. There are other pieces listed below in the special section.

You will have noticed that the two new hot topics in our industry are the Internet of Things and Near Field Communications. We are covering both, and the amount of news in these areas just increases every month. If you have colleagues that are involved in these areas, then feel free to send them a copy of the newsletter and tell them they can subscribe at http://www.hightechaid.com.

If you are interested in RFID things you can follow my tweets at @RFIDMan.

Are you interested in sponsoring the newsletter? We are looking for a new sponsor. Drop me a note to editor@hightechaid.com and let me know.

E-mail me at editor@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don't forget to send this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own issue of the free newsletter at http://www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let me know at news@hightechaid.com.

Technology News Briefs

RFID Standards

From the European IOT Conference: "Standards are like toothbrushes. Everybody wants one but nobody wants to use anybody else's" as quoted by Usman Haque.

The above quote seems to be a great one to summarize the standardization in parts of our industry. While the bar code world sorted itself out (for the most part) early on and made the symbologies freely available to all, this has never happened in the RFID world (or any of the other RF technologies). Standards continue to move, and though from the press coverage there appears to be a lull in the work, there has been a lot of action in the background.

This month we have seen several standards close at various stages of their balloting process in ISO and they will soon move onto the next stage. One big item to note is that the breakup of the ISO/IEC 18000-6 standard is progressing on schedule. Soon instead of one large standard, you will be able to have only the standard for the particular UHF air interface you are interested in. ISO/IEC 18000-63 will be the new standard for the EPCglobal Gen 2 compatible air interface (Type C).

To keep up to date on the work in the RFID standards world visit http://www.understandRFIDstandards.com. If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com.
