From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

Were you in Las Vegas for the AIM Expo? I know that I saw and talked to some of you, but for those that didn't make it, you missed a great show and conference. If you got bored walking the Expo floor, there was always the miles of booths at Pack Expo just across the road. My feet are still sore!

The conference was great with some very good speakers (including yours truly). I moderated and spoke at the Internet of Things session. We had four sessions to update everyone on work in this area.

Then there were the committee meetings that also took place.

The RFID Experts Group (REG) is working on projects related directly to RFID. The current work program includes a healthcare initiative that is looking at the effects of RFID on medical devices, white papers on data content of RFID tags, use of RFID in explosive environments, how active tags work with passive tags, and the use of RFID on mechanical handling equipment.

The Internet of Things committee held its first face to face meeting. We covered a lot of topics including:

  • A better definition of IoT for the AIDC industry

  • Education and communication about IoT

  • A program to educate the U.S. legislature about the need for participation

If you have an interest in any of these areas, you need to get involved. Both committees have regular phone and face to face meetings. If you are an AIM member then simply call AIM to find out how to get involved. If you are not an AIM member, what are you waiting for? Visit http://www.aimglobal.org/joinaim/ for more information.

If you are interested in RFID things you can follow my tweets at @RFIDMan.

Are you interested in sponsoring the newsletter? We are looking for a new sponsor. Drop me a note to editor@hightechaid.com and let me know.

E-mail me at editor@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don't forget to send this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own issue of the free newsletter at http://www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let me know at news@hightechaid.com.

RFID Standards

ISO meetings resume in the first week of November. Since then we have seen many standards either go to ballot or close ballots. Notable items include the publication of:

  • ISO/IEC 24791-2 Software System Infrastructure

  • Amendments to ISO/IEC 14443 parts 2 and 3

  • ISO/IEC 18046-1 Test methods for system performance

  • ISO/IEC 29176 Consumer privacy protection for mobile RFID services

To keep up to date on the work in the RFID standards world visit http://www.understandRFIDstandards.com. If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com.
