From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

It has been very busy in the standards world since I last wrote. A week of SC 31 standards (see below) and a week of Internet Of Things work has kept me busy and out of the office a lot. The IOT week was held in Venice, Italy where the weather was hot and humid, the meeting room had no air conditioning and the internet didn’t work! An IOT meeting with no Internet made some of the presentations interesting.

IOT is certainly gaining momentum, even here in the USA where it has been very slow to gain acceptance. The AIM IOT group has been very busy and you will start to see white papers and a matrix of applications published on the web site. AIM members can sign up for committee activities immediately. If you are not an AIM member then you should contact AIM at IOT@aimglobal.org and tell them I sent you.

Follow my Twitter feed (@RFIDMan) for more current RFID news and information.

Technology News Briefs

RFID Standards

Last month we held the SC 31 Plenary and associated meetings in Pittsburgh, PA at the University of Pittsburgh. Over 80 people registered for the week from 20 different countries or liaison organizations.

The meetings went well, with progress in many areas of the standards arena.

The week involved meetings for:
• WG 7 – Security and File management
• WG 4 – RFID
• WG 2 – Data Structure
• WG 4/SG 6 – RFID Conformance and Performance
• SC 31 Plenary

The plenary meeting is an all-day event, with reports from the various work groups, the national body members, and the liaison organizations. With approx. 45 reports to be reviewed during the meeting, the group got a great feel for the work that is in progress around the world in AIDC. The National Body reports are especially interesting as it gives a chance to see how the technology is being used in countries other than your own. Twelve members of the U.S. National Body were present to hear the various reports.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com. For a look at RFID standards work, you can visit http://www.UnderstandRFIDstandards.com.
