From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

Welcome to 2013. After the slowdown that we saw last year, I am hoping that we will have a much better year ahead of us. There is a saying that is: "May the worst part of the new year be as bad as the best part of the last year". I am certainly looking forward to this becoming true.

In the early part of 2013, you will see some changes to the newsletter and to the web sites behind it. We are working feverishly to provide you with more information in a prompt and easy read manner. Please invite your companions and colleagues to subscribe to the newsletter. Visit http://www.hightechaid.com and sign in below the big red arrow.

Follow my Twitter feed (@RFIDMan) for more current RFID, IOT and AIDC news and information.

Are you interested in sponsoring the newsletter? We are looking for a new sponsor. Drop me a note to editor@hightechaid.com and let me know.

E-mail me at editor@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don't forget to send this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own issue of the free newsletter at http://www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let me know at news@hightechaid.com.

RFID Standards

There have been numerous standards related to RFID published or revised in 2012 and the work is continuing. The first international meeting for RFID standards will be in April, but there are many standards out for ballot as I write this issue of the newsletter. If you want to participate in the work to create or update standards then contact me to talk about your options. High Tech Aid offers various services that allow you to be involved without tying up your company's resources.

If you are wondering about standards then take a look at these statistics (not all of these are RFID, but all are AIDC):

SC 31 – AIDC Techniques – 5 projects
SC 31/WG 1 – Data Carriers – 27 projects
SC 31/WG 2 – Data Structure – 11 projects
SC 31/WG 4 – RFID – 41 projects
SC 31/WG 5 – RTLS – 12 projects
SC 31/WG 6 – Mobile Item Identification and Management – 16 projects
SC 31/WG 7 – Security and File Management – 18 projects

That’s 132 projects, all from one sub-committee inside the ISO arena. Although SC 31 is the primary place for standards associated with AIDC to originate, there are other groups like SC 17 (Cards and personal identification), TC 122 (Packaging), TC 104 (Freight Containers) and TC 204 (Intelligent transport systems) where associated standards are created. There are many more like these committees both inside and outside of the ISO structure (like GS 1).

If you are interested in any of the above, drop me a note.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com. For a look at RFID standards work, you can visit http://www.UnderstandRFIDstandards.com.
