From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

This summer has come and gone and I have lots of news for you. The Internet of things continues to get media attention. As a speaker at a recent event in Washington D.C., I pointed out that IoT came about because of the capabilities of RFID. This means there are about 10 billion UHF RFID tags in circulation now, and by 2020 there will be close to 100 billion with 20 billion being delivered in 2020 alone. These numbers are in contrast to the frequently quoted 20 billion devices being connected by 2020. The dramatically underestimated figures are based on the number of expected IP connected devices. However, the IoT will include many items that will not have direct IP connection.

If you or your company needs consulting help in the world of AIDC, then drop me a note and let's chat. High Tech Aid provides consulting on a variety of areas associated with AIDC.

Follow my Twitter feed (@RFIDMan) for more current RFID, IOT and AIDC news and information.

RFID Standards

Last time I reported on the SC 31 plenary in Delft, The Netherlands.  The work on standards has continued with a set of meetings in Seattle, WA, USA.

These meetings were held to bring some consistency and completeness. The meetings involved SC 31/WG 7, WG 4/SG 3, and WG 4/SG 6.  The discussions revolved around how to create conformance testing standards for the air interfaces and the various crypto suites that reference the air interface standards (ISO/IEC 18000 and ISO/IEC 29167 series standards).

The meetings were a great success with several recommendations for new work items to create the test standards needed.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com. For a look at RFID standards work, you can visit http://www.UnderstandRFIDstandards.com.
